Wooden Sash Windows are the traditional style window used all over the UK in traditional timber built buildings and should be replaced in the traditional style. |
A traditional wooden box sash window most likely dates back to Victorian times, it was then that the style of having wooden sash windows became popular although it was the Edwardians that really made it their own style.
But far from being antiquated relics, traditional wooden box sash windows are actually very stylish with many modern homes again opting for them.
A sash window is a large window that is separated into panes of glass, usually moveable. They are separated by something known as muntins. These separators allow the panes of glass to be attached together into a greater whole then they would otherwise be able to manage.
In many cases the sash windows are able to be moved with all the panes at once, as well as individual panes. This requires careful placement of hinges and the use of counter weights to help ensure that the window is movable and stays where it is supposed to securely.
Usually such a sash weight is made from metal such as lead, these are known as traditional lead sash weights. Heavy woods have often been used in window construction to help keep the traditional wooden box sash windows feel. Whether this is an option or not depends very much upon the weight of the window, the amount of moving needed and your budget for your new windows.
The good news is that just because you want your wooden sash windows to be traditional looking doesn't mean that you have to miss out on the mod cons. Improved technology makes the movement of sash windows far easier, and also allows for them to be 'slid' on rails if that is what you would prefer.
Importantly it is very easy to have the panes of your window double glazed. This helps to keep sounds out, and heat in, saving on heating bills and, if you live in a noisy area, sleepless nights!
Traditional methods allow the wooden box sash windows to be included in almost all decors that you decide for your home. Whether you are looking for that quaint old style cottage feel, or something far more modern, the box sash windows could be exactly what your home needs. New UPVC windows can be manufactured in 'wood effect' simulating the look of wood to a certain extent. But for the true traditional window look and feel we would always recommend using a hardwood that has been pressure treated and finished to a high standard with your choice of top coat.
However as with all wood it is important that you care for it, even pressure treated wood will require some maintenance every so often. Wooden window fittings can warp, rot or swell depending on the weather conditions so you need to ensure that the wood your windows are manufactured from has been pressure treated correctly. As long as your windows material is treated initially correctly to protect it from the elements it will last for years, which will save you a lot of money in the long run!
